An ode to student loan debt

You saw me coming, so young and naive
With visions of careers, money and grandeur you tugged at my sleeve

College is great, think of all the people you’ll meet
Buy all the books, supplies and food you can eat

We’ll loan you some money ….
To help you get on your feet

You knew I was young, wild and free
That I wouldn’t think twice about borrowing against the future me

Don’t pay attention to those nominal fees
You’ll pay them all back once you get that degree

We’ll give you six months to repay all your loans
But if you cannot, there’s no reason to moan

We’ll tack on interest and extend your repayment date
Just remember to never be late!

Now here I am, sitting in debt
And most of your promises have gone on unmet

I’ve pad back thousands upon thousands of dollars
Yet the principal amount doesn’t seem to get smaller

Help me understand oh government of mine
Why I’ll be paying you back until the end of time?

Oh but Courtney we have the answer you see
Get more loans for a masters degree ….
