Work = me time

Well I’ve been back at work for nearly two months and it’s been great. Initially I was nervous to return after being off for nearly 7 months with Nugget. There were numerous fears … missing Nug, balancing working and momming and of course complete/epic failure.

However my reservations were unfounded. I feel like I’ve got a part of the “old” me back … the me before baby. The me who enjoys a solitary walk to Starbucks. The me who talks to other grownups about non-baby topics. The me who redesigns websites and loves it. The me who is seen as a professional in her field. The me who I worked so hard to become.

Becoming a mom is weird because people want you to fall into one of two camps: stay at home mom or working mom. What if you want to be both? What if you want to spend time with your little and keep your career? Oh women …. The world hates it when we try to dabble in too many arenas. Well screw you world … I’m determined to dabble.

I’ve learned I can be both Courtneys …. Stay at home mommy and working mommy. I work part time. I spend the majority of my time momming it up. Catering to all of Nug’s needs while constantly wondering if I’m doing this “mom” thing right and I love it. However my time at work is truly mine. For two days a week I’m in complete control of my schedule… for the most part. I know I’ll be able to eat, talk to adults and give my brain a well-deserved “break.” Work is challenging but it’s a challenge I’m used to meeting. The expectations are clear and the days are outlined in familiarity.

For me double dipping in both worlds works. For some people it doesn’t and you know what … that’s great also! There’s no right way to be a mom or human for that matter. Aren’t we all basically wandering around this planet … just trying to do the best we can and live happy lives?

What have you found works for you and your family?

This is exactly how I felt when I went back to work! I was so nervous. But, I ended up really enjoying my time away. It was the only time I was completely “me.” Don’t get me wrong, I love being a mom. But, like you said, having grown up conversations is really nice, too!! =) Glad going back to work has been such a great experience for you!

It’s so crazy how sometimes the things we are the most afraid turn out to be good in the end!
Thank you for reading and sharing 😊

And sometimes it’s nice to have a little me time! Sometimes it’s just very needed!

It sounds like you’ve totally found what works for you – awesome! Having adult conversations must be terrific instead of baby talk on those 2 days a week 🙂

Yes it can be quite nice! But some days even though I only work the two days I’m not in the mood Hahahaha
      Oh life is funny!

I want to do the same. I think I need it, because years of just momming has slowly worn me down to a sad, restrictive place.

You do what you think you need!

It’s kind of fun to get dressed up twice a week and see people!
Totally agree everyone has to do what works for them!
What are you thinking of doing? Any particular job strike your fancy?

Not really. I tend to feel depressed about it since I have few marketable skills besides writing these days.

I suppose, once the kids are older, I’ll look at more mainstream occupations then.

In the meantime perhaps take a class for fun but something you are also interested in. Like photography, cooking, painting…who knows!
          Could be fun!
